I’m all for self-deprecation, but really Newcastle Brown Ale, where’s the sense of national pride?

I’ve ever seen anybody drinking Brown Ale with food. Perhaps “Making Geordie girls palatable since 1927” might be more apt.
Hi Jill,
Lovely to hear from you. Hope all is well. And you’re right, who drinks their ale while eating. Have one or ten pre-kebab or curry.
Brilliant! And quite brave too!
My blog post or their ad? It’s my blog post, isn’t it?
After a lifetime of living in the land of lager, I’ve only just got my head around bitter and stout (in a good way). So where does ale, and for that matter ‘brown’ ale fit into the hierarchy?
I’m also confused by the slogan. A lighter side of dark?? Really?? Sounds a bit like it’s ‘not one thing nor the other’ to me.
Well beer is divided into ales and lagers. The main distinction between them is that ales are made with top fermenting yeast while lagers are made with bottom fermenting yeast. What we tend to think of as lagers are pilsner style beers, but there’s nothing to stop a pilsner style ale. Going the other way you can have stout that is a lager, such as Baltic stout which tends to use a bottom fermenting yeast. Brown ales tend to have a nutty and malty taste but they’re not as creamy or as treacly as stouts.
I love British ads. Really, this is something I would miss if I moved back to the States.
Making British food palatable since 1927? Ouch!
