58 long, dark nights for America: Pneumonia and solemnity

Fifty-eight long, dark nights to go.

Trump’s Daily Twitter Highlight:

Clinton’s Daily Twitter Highlight: “We’ll never forget the horror of September 11, 2001. Today, let’s honor the lives and tremendous spirit of the victims and responders. -H”

Daily election article of interest: Hillary Clinton diagnosed with pneumonia

If Trump were to win the election he would be the oldest elected President in American history, if Clinton were to win she would be the second oldest, so it is not entirely surprising that health has been an occasional topic this campaign; it has been showcased comically with Dr Borenstein’s statement that Trump would be “the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency,” it has been insinuated with Giuliani’s appeal that voters should google “Hillary Clinton illness,” and today it candidly made the news when Clinton left a 9/11 memorial after feeling ill and later footage showed her having to be assisted into the bag of a van. A statement was later issued saying that Clinton had pneumonia and would be cancelling a planned trip to California in order to recuperate.

Surprisingly, since that statement Trump has stayed off twitter and hasn’t used Hillary’s illness as an opportunity to troll whether she would be capable of serving as President. It would be ridiculously optimistic (or rather gormlessly naive) of me to think that Trump does not intend to try and gain, in his own idiosyncratic style, some political capital out of this. One can only assume that even he realizes that the fifteenth anniversary of 9/11 would be inappropriate timing.

On an evening walk tonight, I could see, ethereal in the night sky, the tribute of light. It made me think how inappropriate, how very disappointing, this farcical, adolescent election really is.
